Tangaroa Blue Foundation Waste Statistics
for Fraser Island (K’Gari) Clean Up 2021

Tangaroa Blue is an Australia-wide not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the removal and prevention of marine debris: one of the major environmental issues worldwide. The Tangaroa team three dynamic individuals who joined us for the Clean-Up were, Jodie, Ian and Melissa and they worked tirelessly with our volunteers to count and capture all the data. We extend them a huge thank-you and we look forward to a long collaboration with the
foundation.
Again in 2021, as in previous years, our volunteers (649 adults & 99 children) joined us cleaned the 123km of eastern beach from the Manta Ray barge landing site at Hook Point in the south to K’Gari’s northern most tip, Sandy Cape.
Six thousand- two hundred kilograms (6200kg) of waste was removed during the 2021
Clean-Up Event. This was an 859kg decrease on the total waste which was collected in
2019. We can only speculate on why this reduction occurred, perhaps Covid-19 had some impact on the amount of international shipping passing through the region, with a reduction of domestic travelers to the island. It will be interesting to see what volume we get in
2022.
